The Underground Railroad was an area where run-a-way slaves were able
to hide out, moving from site to site, until they eventually ended up
North, or South in Florida. The East side of town, still a predominantly
black section of town, was the site of the Underground Railroad. The
American flag in the African colors (red, green, and black) is an eye
opening reminder where both slaves and free blacks lived.
