Sweetgrass basket sowing is a craft that was brought from Africa in the minds of the slaves. The men were the original makers of the basket. Shown here is Joseph Forman displaying the beauty, and the strength of his basket by sitting in it. The Forman family of Charleston have baskets at the Smithsonian and in museums all over America. They are known for their perfection and high quality of basket making.
